Be it enacted by the Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
1 Single-transferable vote
- General election in the UK shall be held using the single-transferable vote electoral system.
- Local and majoral elections within England shall be held using the single-transferable vote electoral system.
- Elections of Police and Crime Commissioners in England and Wales shall be elected using the single-transferable vote electoral system.
- The Droop quota shall be used for all elections using the single transferable vote electoral method.¨
- The Electoral Commission shall be responsible for creating new constituencies.
- The total number for elected members of parliament shall remain at 650.
- Most constituencies shall elect 5 members. However, in certain circumstances the Electoral Commission can decide that constituencies shall elect 4 or 6 members instead.
- No constituency shall cross a national boundary within the United Kingdom.
2 Short Title, Commencement and Extent
- This act applies to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
- This act may be cited as the Elections Act 2022
- Section 1, subsection 1, 2, and 3 comes into force two years after the passing of this act.
- The rest of this act comes into force upon royal assent.
