Be it enacted by the Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—
1 List MPs when a member resigns
When a list MP resigns, the leader of the party that MP belonged to at the time of the election will choose the replacement.
2 Constituency MPs when a member resigns
In order to ensure that every constituency has a voice, if the member who resigns is the representative for a constituency, a by-election is immediately scheduled, and shall take place no fewer than 3 weeks after the member has resigned. A by-election can only be cancelled in the event of a general election being called.
3 Short Title, Commencement, and Extent
- This act applies to Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
- This act may be cited as the Unconditional Representation Act
- This act comes into force upon royal assent.
