Representation of the People Bill 2019

A Bill to expand the registration of voters for the purposes of parliamentary and local government elections.

Be it enacted by the Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

1 Electoral Registration and Franchise

  1. Section (1)(c) in the Representation of the People Act 1983 ("the 1983 Act") shall be amended to read:
    (c) is either a Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Republic of Ireland, a resident who holds the status of indefinite leave to remain, or a resident who has obtained the right of abode.
  2. Section (1)(d) of the 1983 Act shall be amended to read:
    (d) is of voting age (that is, 16 years or over).
  3. Section (2)(c) of the 1983 Act shall be amended to read:
    (c) is either a Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Republic of Ireland, a resident who holds the status of indefinite leave to remain, a resident who has obtained the right of abode.
  4. Section (2)(d) of the 1983 Act shall be amended to read:
    (d) is of voting age (that is, 16 years or over).
  5. Omit Section(3) from the Representation of the People Act of 1983.
  6. Omit Section(3A) from the Representation of the People Act of 1983. (Amendment A)

2 Short title, commencement and extent

  1. This Act may be cited as the Representation of the People Act 2019.
  2. (2) The Act comes into force immediately upon passage.
  3. (3) These Regulations extend to the whole of the United Kingdom Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
